Young ecologists were presented environmental activity of the Group of Companies «Titan»

The 10th in 2019 tour around the industrial facilities of «Omsky kauchuk» plant (which forms a part of the Group of Companies «Titan») was arranged for university and college students in November on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the Group of Companies «Titan». Future graduates of the Chemistry Department of Dostoevsky Omsk State University visited a test sanitary-industrial laboratory (TSIL).

Students majoring in «Ecology and Natural Management» are frequent visitors of the industrial facilities of the GC «Titan» and «environmental» laboratory of the plant. This time the second-year students could not only explore ecological activity of the PJSC «Omsky kauchuk» but also learn more about specifics of their future profession.

The TSIL continuously monitors the conditions of atmospheric air at the enterprise and its quality in residential area of Sovetsky district of Omsk as well as at the border of the sanitary protection zone of the plant. The students learned that maximum permissible emission of flowing matter measured in grams per second is the key indicator of monitoring. The TSIL engineer measures aerodynamic flow performance — temperature, pressure and speed — using special devices — digital differential pressure gages equipped with pilot tubes of various length. Sampling is carried out by the TSIL workers at the height of 50 meters. According to 10M 2019 reports no exceeds of normal levels of content of organic and inorganic matter in the atmosphere air was detected at monitoring points.

«Depending on a set task about 10 types of sampler units are used for air sampling — both «classic» glass syringes, gas pipettes and liquid absorbers and sorbent tubes, fiber-optic air filters, one-use silicone samplers with carbonous sorbent and metal filtering cartridges, — explained Irina Chukomina, lab technician, head of the group of «Atmospheric air» laboratory. — The sample is converted into solution according to a certified procedure and then is analyzed. Our specialists also perform direct measurements and snap analysis of the samples for 10 components by means of a portable gas analyzer». After the lecture the most curious students could even take air sample from the sampler, put it into the chromatograph and obtain the results by themselves.

Future specialists were also told about the examination of waste waters in detail. The TSIL lab technicians carry out sampling at more than 60 specially equipped points. «Using certified procedures the content of metals, aromatic hydrocarbons, nitrogen, phenol, suspended matter, chloride- and phosphate-ions and other components in the water is determined. Every day we perform about 150 tests», - noted Natalia Bobkova, lab technician, head of the group responsible for monitoring quality of the enterprise waste waters.

Precision of measurements performed in the lab is proved by the fact that in some procedures metrics are defined with five decimal place accuracy. All instruments undergo schedule calibration. Every year the TSIL takes part in in-house comparative tests in order to verify professional skills of the employees, accuracy and precision of the tests performance.

Once again I was convinced that ecology is not only important but also very interesting, - noted Kamila Tuginbaeva, second-year student. - With our own eyes we saw how the work on environment protection is arranged at large enterprises: a lot of people is involved, arrangements and measurements are performed continuously».

It shall be noted that expenses of the GC «Titan» for HSE activities exceeded 200 million rubles for 9 months.
