Students studied chemistry using a football ball

How many PET-bottles are needed to manufacture one football kit, why are referee's cards made of plastic and what is the difference between latex and rubber bladder? Unusual lecture was delivered at Siberian Cossack Technologies and Management University (SCTMU).

Ball, goalkeeper's gloves, football kit, samples of synthetic rubber and polypropylene were main visual aids brought by representatives of the largest Siberian petrochemical company Group of Companies «Titan» to schools and vocational educational institutions to give classes.

About 50 students of SCTMU — future C&I workers, operators, mechanics and process engineers, which will soon become employees of «Omsky» and «Poliom» (joint venture of the Group of Companies «Titan», Gazprom Neft and SIBUR) — were the first to hear the new lectures «Elements of Soccer».

«Synthetic resin has been used for manufacturing of bladder since 1855», says Maxim Grechanin, employee of the «GC «Titan» JSC, demonstrating a specimen of raw material — resin manufactured by Omsk enterprise. «Ball cover was changing over the years from skin to modern light synthetic materials and official ball of World Cup 2018 Telstar 2018 was manufactured using processed raw materials. Besides, it is equipped with special NFC-chip making possible communication via mobile device».

Lecture center of «Titan» is a practice-oriented project aimed to spark interest to the profession and to starkly illustrate the role of petrochemistry in human's life. Lessons and lectures have been delivered since 2014.

About 700 students of senior school and industry-specific secondary and higher educational institutions, for which «field» lessons are delivered and tours to production facilities of the Group of Companies «Titan» are arranged, take part in the project. In 2017 the project became international: open lesson was conducted for 46 students from 22 countries of Europe, Asia and Africa who visited petrochemical production facilities of the Group of Companies «Titan».

Brochures «Chemistry of Victories», «Myths of Chemistry» and «Elements of Soccer» used as teaching aids were published by Russian Union of Chemists jointly with the largest petrochemical companies of the country: Group of Companies «Titan», Sibur, Nizhnekamskneftekhim and others.

The publication «Elements of Soccer» tells about the stages of hydrocarbons processing before sport equipment, structures of football stadiums, elements of road infrastructure and devices for medical centers, which are mandatory at public events, are manufactured from it.
