Pig-breeding complex of Titan-Agro Ltd continues to replace a herd gene

The pig-breeding complex Petrovsky which is the subdivision of Titan-Agro Ltd introduced 15 pure-breed male and 40 female pigs from a Canadian genetic company Genesus Genetics into the main herd. A second batch of 60 pigs is expected to arrive in October-November of 2020.

All in all 115 pigs were purchased for livestock regeneration in 2020. The supplier is a Russian company which is a partner of Genesus Genetics, a global leading manufacturer of advanced genetics for swine breeding. The pedigree breeding unit is located in Voronezh region. The young stock has a great potential for the breeding and is adapted to the conditions of Russian pig industry.

The first group is male pigs of Duroc, Landrace and Yorkshire breeds, as well as Yorkshire female pigs who have traveled 2000 kilometers and arrived to Omsk region in summer of 2020. The pigs were under quarantine for one and a half month, undergoing the necessary medical procedures such as laboratory tests and vaccinations. At present they are released into the pig herd.

Earlier, in accordance with the stringent requirements of veterinary legislation, the specialists from Titan-Agro Ltd approved with the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance Administration for animals’ departure and arrival points in Omsk Region. They also approved a route with an exact indication of all settlements and roads, and also received an import permit.

«Purebred animals were purchased to gradually replace the genetics of the Irish company Hermitage Genetics which left the market with Genesus Genetics, – explained the director of the Petrovsky pig farm Alexander Kopiev.

- According to our calculations, this labor-intensive process will take several years”. The first step in this direction was made on the pig-breeding complex in 2019, when 13 swine were purchased from the very same genetic selection center.

Currently the pig stock exceeds 60 thousand heads. The live-stock facility of AO GC Titan belongs to the IV compartment which is the farm of the highest degree of biological protection. Besides, Titan-Agro Ltd has been a member of Omsk Biocluster since 2016.
