“Green” technologies: petrochemical industry makes suggestions for eco-friendly industry development

Prospects of “green import substitution” in the industry were discussed on the platform of the Chemical Industry Committee of "Delovaya Rossiya".  Despite a current difficult situation, the committee experts begin to make suggestions for the development of eco-friendly manufacturing in Russia.

On October 4 representatives of small business and science, authorities, community leaders, and media representatives discussed development options of “green” economy in today's conditions, the use of “green” technologies as part of import substitution, options to support eco-companies, as well as transformation of ESG-agenda in Russia.

Mikhail Sutyaginsky, Chairman of the Chemical Industry Committee of “Delovaya Rossiya” moderated the event. The discussion was held in the form of a strategic session. It began a series of working sessions to determine the basic conditions for the development of Russian eco-friendly industry, its tasks and consumer requests.

The meeting was attended by Oleg Kalinko, Director of the Advanced Manufacturing Technologies Cluster of the Skolkovo Foundation, and Andrey Volchik, Managing Director of the Sberbank External Economic Partnership Development Division. The representatives of Sberbank presented their petrochemical relevant solutions in the field of eco-projects support and import substitution. In addition, Sber spoke about the opportunities to support chemical companies in building up imports from friendly countries, using the example of work with India.

Alexander Kobenko, head of the Delovaya Rossiya Committee on Waste and Secondary Resources, and Darya Shevyakina, deputy director of the Department of Chemical Engineering Complex and Bioengineering Technology of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia, also addressed the audience with a welcoming speech.

“It is the petrochemical industry that accelerates development and creation of solutions and technologies in the field of eco-products and services. Processed plastic, waste disposal technologies, petrol additives, and many other examples of the modern eco-market relate to our industry,” Chairman of the Chemical Industry Committee of “Delovaya Rossiya Mikhail Sutyaginsky noted.

The committee experts emphasized the importance of creating cluster industries to develop eco-industry. It will allow the domestic industry to comply with up-to-date global environmental standards and significantly reduce the environmental impact.

“First of all industrial clusters should be created to reduce waste so that they can manufacture new products from recycled materials. It is also important now to develop and legislate the criteria and requirements for such eco-technoparks, so that they can, provided they meet all the requirements, receive state support,” emphasized Olga Torbich, deputy head of "Spatial Development" of the CSR.

Currently, the Chemical Industry Committee of "Delovaya Rossiya" has received requests from five regions where small manufacturing companies are already operating, ready to share their positive experience in the ecosphere.  The Skolkovo Foundation has developed special programs for its partners to support the greening of production, so they can find eco-technologies according to investor requests.

“If a company becomes a leader of our accelerating program, it can be awarded a grant of up to 7 million rubles if co-financed from their own funds or with the involvement of their industrial partners’ funds. In addition, it is a great opportunity for business to get information from different companies and find out what technologies, including “green”ones, are in current demand. It allows a company to coordinate and choose a right development path,” Director of the Advanced Manufacturing Technologies Cluster of Skolkovo Foundation Oleg Kalinko noted.

At the end of the meeting a protocol including the suggestion made at the event to establish systematic work in the framework of eco-production was formed.
