Experts of the Russian Union of Chemists Commission for the development of low- and medium-tonnage chemicals with the support of the Chemical Industry Committee of “Business Russia” made proposals for a programme of research and project activities for students.
Vice President of the Russian Union of Chemists, Chairman of the Chemical Industry Committee of “Business Russia” Mikhail Sutyaginsky:
After graduating from university, it takes about 5-7 years for an employee to become a skilled professional. These statistics show that there is a gap in the workforce, which is filled in different ways by different companies. These ways include corporate universities, mentoring programmes, and partnership with specialized universities.
At the same time, enterprises cannot completely solve the problem with the shortage of personnel on their own.
First Vice President of the Russian Union of Chemists Maria Ivanova:
The staffing problem should be solved by introducing a systemic approach. The motivation of future specialists should be created while they are still school students. Today, the chemical industry needs outstanding and young leaders. In this respect, we need different ways to attract talented young people to our industry. As an example we have a track of the federal contest Leaders of Russia.
If school is the first base for career choice, then the process of obtaining higher education should be observed by future employers. Both representatives of business and specialists from universities speak talk about it. After graduating from university, Young professionals should not only know the professional specifics of their chosen career, but also be able to work in a team and think critically.
Deputy General Director for Business Development of GC Titan Velentina Prilepskaya:
For employers a graduate is an investment project with high risks. In support of systemic work, the state could provide for reimbursement of the cost of mentoring programmes, as well as programmes to develop students' competencies at corporate universities.
During the meeting, the experts voiced examples of effective practices that will be included in the Commission's work programme. Among them is the project "Scientific Standup" by Komsomolskaya Pravda Publishing House, as well as the creation of a youth student activist on the platform of the industry community. The next meeting of the Commission on Human Resources Issues of the Chemical Industry will be held at the end of September at the Komsomolskaya Pravda Publishing House.
