New process equipment – a modern evaporation unit (waste-heat boiler) – has been delivered at Omsky kauchuk (part of the AO GC Titan). It will be installed in the butadiene production shop.

During the butadiene production the chemical reactions in isobutene dehydrogenation units produce contact gas – a mixture of hydrocarbons with a temperature of 530-580°C. The mixture has to be chilled down to 200°C for further transformations. The waste-heat boiler is designed to perform the procedure – it is a massive pipe unit that uses excess heat to produce overheated steam required in the process.

The use of the waste-heat boiler provides not only an economic but also an environmental effect.

The new unit will replace older equipment. The weight of the waste-heat boiler is more than 13 tons and the volume is 10 m^3.  The unit has been made of high strength steel in Yekaterinburg and has a service life of 10 years. 

“Due to the innovative ideas, implemented by a manufacturer, the new compact boiler has a high heat transfer coefficient. It means the boiler will reduce the contact gas temperature more effectively,” as it was explained at the plant. 

In 2019 a similar unit was installed at the butadiene production for waste gas heat recovery. It confirmed the compliance with the manufacturer's stated specifications.

The waste-heat boiler is planned to be installed in May 2022. A truck crane is planned to be used during the installation.  

Phased modernization of equipment in the butadiene production shop has been underway since 2017.
