The AO GC Titan joins carbon neutrality program.
This was initiated by the decision of the Russian Government after completion of strategic initiatives for socio-economic development. A number of projects have been developed to improve the quality of people's lives, and additional investment is planned to be directed into the environmental sector as well.
Omsk region can also lay claim to support from the federal centre, as it remains the largest region with a well-developed petrochemical industry. The representatives of the AO GC Titan told us whether Omsk chemical industry meets modern environmental standards.
Both environmental activists and supervisory bodies had questions to this enterprise. This was caused by the long-running waste accumulation ponds reclamation of the AO “Omsky kauchuk” plant. However, according to the management of the plant, the reclamation work is being constantly carried out and more than 50 million rubles have already been spent on it. Another 200 million roubles have been allocated in the plant's budget for further project implementation. And the reason for proceedings, public and prosecutor's critics was the protracted procedure for establishing the landfill boundaries.
- We have developed the ponds reclamation project, and as soon as we get approval from the environmental impact assessment, we will immediately start its implementation,” Alexey Obukhov, Deputy General Director for Legal Affairs at the AO GC Titan said.
It is planned to bring clean soil to the landfill, and in the future to plant trees.
It should be noted that the plant is constantly upgrading its production facilities. Since 2004 the company has invested more than ten billion roubles in various environmental projects and mitigation measures.
- The current economic situation presents us with a number of challenges,” Mikhail Sutyaginsky, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the AO GC Titan, explains. - We produce important chemical products, including those that fit the times. Thus, with the pandemic beginning we started producing pure isopropyl alcohol used both for prophylactic and medical purposes. The next important task, expected to take decades to complete, is achieving carbon neutrality.”
As Farkhad Samedov, General Director of the AO GC Titan, explained, over the last few years it had became possible to significantly reduce emissions from chemical production into the atmosphere, and due to the latest developments used, to eliminate the use of chlorine and to disinfect the recycled water with biocytes. Biologically renewable resources are used for this purpose.
The company is operating in accordance with the latest environmental standards, has its own laboratory for environmental monitoring, and the percentage of chemical emissions is about 1.5 per cent of all emissions occurring in the city of Omsk. And the proportion of harmful and polluting emissions is planned to be reduced by a further 20 per cent.
