Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Omsk region: AO “Omsky kauchuk” became the first company to openly discuss environmental issues with the public

On 14th of July AO “Omsky kauchuk” and AO GC Titan executives answered the federal ecological media-project “Green line”questions on live. The plant became the first large industrial participant in a one-on-one dialogue in the "Business will answer" format.

The federal project for study the citizens environmentally anxiety “Green line” was initiated by the web-based media team “Ecology of Russia” and All-Russian eco-warriors organization “Do!” in 2020. In May 2021 the petrochemical enterprise AO GC Titan took part in the first online-conference of the project, and in July it accepted an invitation to a frank conversation.

The country's attention to the plant, in particular to the industrial waste landfill, was drawn at the June "Direct Line" with the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin.

Representatives of the Russian environmental movement and eco-oriented journalists joined the “Green line” live in Moscow. Dmitry Soloviev from the Soil Institute named after V.V. Dokuchaeva was an expert. AO “Omsky kauchuk” and AO GC Titan executives discussed with them from Omsk by video conferencing. Special guests were Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of the Omsk Region Ilya Lobov and eco-bloggers from Moscow, Pskov and St. Petersburg.

At the beginning of July, during the meeting preparation the “Green line” shooting team visited Omsk, the site and landfill. The video plot included the report and communication with Omsk people on the streets, was demonstrated during the broadcast. Interviewed townspeople noted an improvement in the situation with smells.

Farkhad Samedov, the General Director of AO GC Titan, noted during the live that the openness for the dialogue with the social activists and ecologists is principled position of management of the AO GC Titan. Within the excursion activity carried out by the company, any interested citizen can get to the plant. He also spoke about projects related to the modernization of the site.

“The modernization of the plant can be divided into three stages. The first one began in 1995, when the production of methyl tert-butyl ether was mastered. It allowed stopping the leaded gasoline production. It contained such harmful additive as tetraethyl lead. This year the new organic synthesis production units’ construction at the AO “Omsky kauchuk” plant was complete. The next stage will be transition to the production of ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE). So we stop to produce methanol.” he noted.

The questions posed during the broadcast related to the possibility of performing express diagnostics of the state of the atmospheric air, filtering emissions, documentation for the installation of phenol and acetone, and landfill reclamation. Peter Fain, the head of the department of labour protection, industrial safety and ecology of AO “Omsky kauchuk”, answered the questions.

He noted that laboratory analysis data used by the company are more accurate than express methods, which have large error. There is special equipment – absorbers capture of gaseous substances, they are located at the cleaning units. Filters, as devices, are used to capture particulate matter, but such particulates are not generated in the manufacturing process of the enterprise.

The work with the landfill conducted by the company in accordance with the legislation, and after the recycling of the accumulated substances, this territory will be available for the new industrial construction. The organizers highly appreciated the openness of the Siberian enterprise and its willingness to cooperate with the public.
